The little village of Khimsar is located on the highway from Jodhpur to Bikaner, about an hour outside of the Rathore stronghold, past the historic temples of Osian with their beautiful stone sculptures. Khimsar started as a small kingdom founded by a member of the Jodhpur family. While the Jodhpur royalty maintains that it was never independent, the Thakurs of Khimsar assert that it was not only a separate state but that Emperor Aurangzeb personally visited their ancient fort. Construction of the fort began in 1523, but the family did not relocate there until the 18th century when they built a new zenana, or women’s wing.

Thakur Onkar Singh, the current inhabitant of the fort, created a royal wing for himself in the 1940s. The pride of Khimsar today is still that fort, which is 450 years old and presently houses the 18th, 19th, and 20th generations of Khimsar Thakurs.
