Canada and India Cooperate to Expand Flight Routes, Trudeau Announces

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada and India have reached a new agreement to increase travel and routes, which includes one to Amritsar. The deal, which was signed in November 2022, gives authorized airlines the freedom to operate an endless number of flights between the two countries, allowing them to better satisfy the needs of the air transport sector between Canada and India. Trudeau promised the Sikh community that Canada’s government would continue working with India to further broaden the agreement, offering more accessible options for flight tickets from Canada to India.

Trudeau’s Assurance to the Sikh Community

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reassured the Sikh community that Canada has negotiated a “new agreement” with India to bring more flights and routes between the two nations and would continue to work with its counterparts to introduce more flights, including one to Amritsar.

On Sunday afternoon, Trudeau made his comments during the Khalsa Day Parade in Toronto’s downtown.

According to him, a lot of Canadians wish to visit their loved ones in India more frequently.

At the Khalsa Day celebration, when pro-Khalistan slogans were raised, Trudeau stated, “That’s why our government has negotiated a new agreement with India to add more flights and routes between our countries and we will keep working with our counterparts to add even more flights, including to Amritsar.”

Previous Restrictions on Canada-India Air Travel

An open skies agreement between Canada and India was reached in November 2022, allowing selected airlines to run an infinite number of flights between the two nations.

Before the agreement, there could only be 35 weekly flights by the designated carriers between Canada and India.

“This significant move will help airlines serving Canada and India better meet the needs of the air travel market between their two nations. The Canadian government said in a statement on November 14, 2022, “In the future, representatives from both countries will continue to communicate to discuss expanding the agreement.”

It was not immediately possible to determine if the two nations had lately considered expanding the agreement they signed in 2022.

Air India currently operates ten weekly flights to Toronto and seven weekly flights from Delhi to Vancouver. Another place that Air Canada flies to is India. Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Official Opposition, also demanded a direct flight to Amritsar.

Trudeau’s Address: Balancing Allegations and Commitments

In his remarks, Trudeau pledged to defend Sikh liberties and rights in Canada at all times and to defend the community from prejudice and hate. India is furious about the allegations that it participated in the Sikh separatist’s death last year. Thousands of people flocked to Toronto’s downtown on Sunday for one of the biggest annual events in the city.

Vaisakhi, also known as Khalsa Day, honors both the Sikh New Year and the beginning of the Sikh community in 1699, according to the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwaras Council (OSGC).

In April, we also celebrate Sikh Heritage Month. According to Trudeau, five years ago, our government officially recognized Sikh Heritage Month, making Canada the first country in history to do so.

It is a chance to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of Sikh Canadians in the fields of commerce, science, politics, the arts, and railroads. Additionally, they served in both World Wars. As Sikh Heritage Month comes to an end, I want everyone to remember that the story of the Sikh community in Canada is, in fact, the story of Canada. Trudeau remarked, “Building a better future for everyone is what Canada is all about, working together.”

“Waheguru ji ka khalsa Vaheguru ji ki fateh,” or “the Khalsa belongs to Waheguru (God)!” was how Trudeau began his remarks. Therefore, God is the rightful winner!”

“To the nearly 800,000 Canadians of Sikh heritage across this country, we will always be there to protect your rights and your freedoms, and we will always defend your community against hatred and discrimination,” he said.

Trudeau’s Cabinet Ministers Attend Event

He mentioned that as part of his government’s infrastructure and security plan, community centers and places of worship were receiving more protection. Trudeau was accompanied at the event by four Cabinet ministers. He was greeted with “Khalistan Zindabad” yelling as he got closer to the podium.

The relationship between India and Canada became extremely tense when Trudeau made accusations last year about a “potential” Indian operational role in the June killing of Khalistani rebel Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The accusations made by the Canadian government have been dismissed by India as “absurd and motivated.” Ottawa is accused by India of supporting Sikh separatists.

Following Trudeau’s announcement, India and Canada banded together to try to boost flight connectivity, which should lead to more options for travel.
