Air Canada in talks with GTAA to impose new limits on flights

Air Canada reacts to the imposition of flights

Air Canada – a major cheap flights Canada air carrier has issued a statement in response to the recently announced operating new limits at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The airline says in the statement that it was aware of the impending limitations and had taken the required preparations to guarantee that its operations ran smoothly in conformity with the new laws.

The airport authority will enforce regulations during high travel seasons, limiting the number of planes that can depart from the airport on any given day. While this would limit airline operations and raise ticket prices, the airport believes it will help minimize the frequency of aircraft interruptions.

Efforts by Air Canada

In an effort to avoid delays, Canada’s largest airport says it would impose “strict limits” on the number of planes entering or departing during March break and peak summer hours.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which manages Toronto Pearson International Airport, stated in an email that it will also limit the number of passengers who may arrive internationally with flights to Canada or go to the United States through each terminal in a given hour.

Toronto airport’s take on this

Earlier this week, officials at YYZ officially decided to curtail airline operations during high travel seasons. Air Canada has reacted positively to the announcement. It claims it previously anticipated the limitations and is prepared to change flight itineraries as needed.

This month marks the occurrence of the first limited period, as the airport anticipates a spike in passenger flow during spring break. Air Canada has said that there would be no adjustments to its flight schedule at YYZ during this time.

The decision to limit business

The decision to limit the number of planes and passengers at the airport may appear unusual, given that travelers are the primary source of revenue for airlines and airports. The airport, on the other hand, does not want a replay of last year.

This summer, the airport’s air transit operations, as well as its systems and personnel, became overburdened. While the airport was able to adapt and overcome considerable hurdles, it did so only after several flight delays and cancellations. These limits should assist to reduce the number of flight delays at the airport.

GTAA’s take on this decision

According to airline industry analysts, the GTAA‘s decision to limit the number of flights and passengers during the peak travel season this year is a great step, but it could have been implemented sooner to avoid airlines from overselling tickets.

“This has been a long time coming,” said John Gradek, a former Air Canada executive who now teaches aviation management at McGill University.

“The airlines submitted their operational plan for summer 2023 to Pearson airport last autumn,” Gradek explained. “The airport authority’s introduction of a change to that level of infrastructural capacity until the end of February 2023 is an interesting development.

“Spring break is in ten days. The flights are already fully booked. People have booked and purchased their plane tickets,” he added.

According to Stephen Tufts, a spokesperson for the Toronto Airport Workers’ Council and an associate professor of labor geography at York University, the GTAA appears to be attempting to act proactively in order to avoid the turmoil that the airport experienced last summer.
